12 chairs it ain't, but it is the funniest programming book, I've ever read. Moore takes an approach that's very much different from other .NET books. Rather than teaching visual basic via the standard method of indoctrination, he takes us through a set of tutorials, each of which has a stated goal. In my opinion, this is a better approach, because it more closely mimics real-life projects, which are almost always goal-oriented.

Another pleasant change was the language. It is not formal in any way, shape or form. The guy talks like a sailor (well, almost) and is extremely easily understood.

This book is great for newbies & intermediates. The advanced readers will probably find that they already know a good half of the book. You'll gain various skills such as working with the databases (there is a large section on MSDE and SQL Server), doing web development, some web services, porting from vb6 to .net, etc… There is even a section of developing applications for mobile devices, which is quite cool.

Great read for budding programmers.
