I've always been curious about programming for Palm, given that I've written some software for Casio Zoomer, HP200 and Blackberry handhelds some years ago. So with that in mind, I got to reading Jon Kilburn's book.

This tome covers Palm programming using three Basic variants: AppForge, NS Basic, and CASL. And as such, all the examples are listed in triplicate. So, if you are only interested in, say, NS Basic, the book would be three times as thin. A quick run-through the environments is in order, for those who don't know. AppForge is basically a plugin to VB6. It lets you write code in what is essentially VB6 syntax. Then it can sync up your program straight from the menu. NS Basic is a standalone program. Its variant of Basic is more reminiscent of QuickBasic - it is not particularly object oriented. Finally, CASL, is somewhere between Basic and C.

Another factor in purchasing this book should be knowing that it is designed to get professional programmers (and newbies to some extent) up to speed on these tools. If you are looking for some advanced information on, say, AppForge, you won't find it here.

Overall, the book provides a good start for someone seeking to leverage the knowledge of BASIC into new unchartered territories.
