Jeffrey Veen, the veteran of Webmonkey, HotWired, and HotBot web sites, has put out a definitive guide to building web sites. Normally technical books are full of dry facts but this one takes a different tack. I enjoyed reading the book and actually read it from cover to cover - something I rarely do for a technical book.

Having said that, do not assume that you'll learn the ins and outs of various HTML . If you want that, then get HTML Unleashed or something similar. This book is all about making consistent choices when building web sites. We plan to use some of the lessons learned in this book for our own site (it needs it, right?).

Jeffrey spends a good amount of time telling the reader what NOT to do. And there are plenty of examples on prominent sites, in fact. He sings praises though to structured design like Yahoo's.

Towards the end of the book, the author puts it all the elements of web site design together to build a dynamic site with a totally consistent look. Not only that - the maintanance on it is extremely easy as well through the use of the database, ASP, templates, etc…

I highly recommend this book, if you are in any facet of web design work.
