My immediate impression after reading the book: incredibly useful. The book addresses many issues that would be difficult to figure out on your own or would take hours/days/weeks of begging in the newsgroups.

Karl's previous book "Visual Basic .NET: The Tutorials" was good, but this book is great. He has this uncanny ability to take a complex subject and present it in a simple manner, understandable to anyone. In addition, the tone of the book is light, giving a mildly amusing feel.

Each chapter is subdivided into several sections, but essentially is broken down into technology essentials and tips/tricks/examples. The author covers areas such as moving from VB6, desktop apps, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Web Services, Mobile devices, RegEx, etc… When I say "covers", I don't mean he teaches you ADO.NET or ASP.NET. Instead, he presents a problem (sometimes simple, sometimes difficult) and a solution. A good case in point would be an example of how to force a dropdown list into a cell of a DataGrid. Another example is how to check whether 2 files are identical.

Anyway, great read, fantastic book.
