The hypothesis presented by the author states that instead of being pissed off (or at best, indifferent) at your corp for taking away your red stapler, you should unite the people you work with to form a potent force to drive profit, cooperation and teamwork, and thus in the process save your jobs. Only by bonding your teammates, do you (or your corp) stand a chance of putting out a better product, doing better tech support, customer service, etc…
Once you get into details though, you get a fantastic guide on how to get ahead in the workplace. Even more useful is the commentary on how to deal with various fiefdoms setup throughout your corporation. You know those things… someone comes up with a set of rules; just so that you have to jump through his hoop for no apparent reason whatsoever.
Even though "Unite the Tribes" is the opposite of Office Space, you'll find yourself spotting similarities between Duncan's descriptions and your workplace the entire time you are reading the book. His portrayals of corporate life are spot on. Same with what it takes to motivate your fellow worker bees.
The difference between this and other "business advice" books is that this one speaks to you as an employee, whether you are in the mail room or the executive bathroom. It enables you to get ahead while helping out your co-workers and your employer.
