Don't be thrown away by "Enterprise Services" buzzword, there is no "new generation" of COM+ in .Net. Services in unmanaged code are known as COM+ services. In .NET, these services are referred to as Enterprise Services. .Net simply includes COM+ (of course there is a new name for it: Enterprise Services, but this is just pure marketing matter)! Well, maybe this is not completely true, many .Net features are integrated into this technology and it is a lot easier to use these new services from .Net.
The author found the right way in explaining most of the .Net Enterprise Services features and why are they necessary in building enterprise applications. The writing style is clear, the content is exhaustive enough for covering all the aspects of .Net Enterprise Services. This is more than just a how-to book, this book clearly explains the fundamental concepts behind component-based distributed development.
In addition to describing .Net Enterprise Services features and their use, from developer and administrative perspectives, the author provides motivation to take advantage of features by Enterprise Services presenting relevant examples. Examples in this book are in C# (Visual Basic .NET developers can download VB.NET samples from the Web).
After reading this book you will quickly get up to speed on building distributed applications with Enterprise Services. Chapters I liked most: Chapter 11 - "Loosely Coupled Events", Chapter 12 - "Security" and Chapter 14 - "The Future of Distributed Applications" where author describes a Microsoft's next-generation technology - Indigo - for building distributed applications, and how it should replace .Net remoting, ASP.NET Web services and Enterprise Services.
