This book is great for mid to advanced users of ADO. If you are not one of those,
you might want to get a "For Dummies" first and then move up to this one. If you
are in the right category, though, this tome will vastly enhance your knowledge
of ADO, improve your coding skills and will make you aware of many gotchas,
we don't normally think about with ADO.
William Vaughn's (of the Hitchhiker Guide fame) inside knowledge of ADO
(he used to be employed by Microsoft and still has some type of association
with them) greatly helps this book because he actually tells us what goes
on when we do routine things in ADO. For instance, did you know that a
Command object is created anytime you open a recordset? So much for
avoiding the Command object to save CPU cycles.
At any rate, the bottom line is that "ADO Examples and Best Practices" is a
must read for anyone who is seriously working with ADO or trying to become
a guru at it. It is one of Apress publication's standout first releases
by an elite veteran author. Why only four fingers up, you ask, if it is
such a good book? The incessant use (and explanation of what it means) usenet
terms like IMHO drove me nuts. At times it felt like I was reading a flame war
on news://news.devx.com/off.ramp. IMHO, that is LAME!
